Heritage Memorial Garden at Tolson Museum

Before we start. The Garden as it is now.
Before we start. The Garden as it is now.

The Heritage Memorial Garden project, awarded £97,000 by Heritage Lottery, is beginning to take shape. Briefs have been drawn up; one for an artist to work with different communities on the three sculptures in the garden; one for the creation of a time line on the footpath and one for the landscaping of the garden. Work will start in April/May. Several ‘Friends’ have attended a course on how to collect oral history, run by the University of Huddersfield. The Friends will collect stories and reflections from local people who lived in Huddersfield during World War II and those who have served in conflicts since 1945. The information will be recorded and some of it put on an information board in the garden. There will also be information boards on the history of Ravensknowle Hall and garden. The development of the ‘Friends of Tolson and Ravensknowle’ website is underway.

Crosses in memory of service men and women, that have been planted in Huddersfield Market Square, will in future be planted in a special place in the new garden in November.

Young people from Almondbury High School & Language College, King James School and Netherall Learning Campus will plant and look after three areas in the garden. Pupils from the Almondbury Schools Community Partnership will also work on the timeline and students from Kirklees College will be involved in planting and dry stone wall building. ‘Friends’, local residents, the Sea Scouts and other volunteers will help with the ongoing maintenance of the garden.

It is an exciting time – watch out for Spring Newsletter 3
