Tolson Museum re-opens after entrance refurbishment
Tolson Museum has been shut for the entrance area to be refurbished. We had a sneak look while the work was taking place. It is looking stunning. This work is thanks to an award from the Arts Council.
Because of the disruption, the Tea & Cake meeting this month had to be in the Transport Gallery. Thanks to help from Museum Staff we were able to fit everyone in. Mohammed Kalid, West Yorkshire Fire Officer, was an excellent speaker and we learnt a lot. In particular, if you don’t have a fire alarm in your property, the fire service will come and fit one or more free. Also they fit special ones if you are deaf. Future meetings are in the Woodhead Hall.
The Heritage Memorial Garden looks very colourful. We garden on the second and fourth Saturday morning in the month meeting at 10am,weather permitting. Many magazines are offering free bulbs so if you have a minute to order some, and would like to donate them to the garden, we will plant them. Also if you are dividing perennial plants and have some to spare please, bring them along.
The Tolson Junior Parkrun draws between 30 and 60 children every Sunday morning. It is a really fun affair with a social gathering for refreshments afterwards. It is all free and a real opportunity for children to enjoy running with friends.
The reopening of the museum in October comes at a time in the history of Tolson when we are reminded of the losses in WW1. It was on 20th October 1918 that James Tolson was killed. He was aged 20, and was the second Tolson brother to be killed in the war. Robert Tolson died at the Somme. The annual Remembrance Service is at 10.45 on Saturday 11th November. It will be led by Rev Nancy Barbarinde. Wreaths will be laid by members of the community.
