The Poems of Owen and Sassoon

By: Dr David Rudrum, Senior lecturer at Huddersfield University.

The poems of Owen and Sassoon have captured the popular imagination as the definitive voices of the first world war. But their beautifully crafted lines were written at a time when poetry itself was turning away from genteel, polished verse, and embracing instead the upheaval and chaos of the modern age. Other poets wrote poems that were disordered  beautiful, senseless rather than meaningful, in order to capture the mayhem of war.
